Geoff In your reply from Ann Smith, she mentions that her cousin Marvin Hector after a visit to Aberdeen, Scotland, obtained a copy of a family tree dating back to 1610. I gave Marvin the copy of this tree, which was originally sponsored by a John Hector, a Fish Merchant in Aberdeen, in the 1930's. I got a copy from his daughter and added some up to date material and this is what Marvin brought back to the states. This also formed the basis for the Scottish part of Ann Smith's book. Over the last 300 years, there have been a number of Hectors involved in Laxfishing, or Salmon Fishing to give its better known name, but they were not originally involved in Fishing. The early ones were mostly Farmers. There has been much speculation about where the Hector's originated, some say Holland or Denmark, yet there are no Hectors presently living in any of these countries, which there certainly would be if they originated there. It would appear that they arrived in the U.K. from Germany where there are still Hectors living. Records show that there were Hectors in Scotland in the 15th century and there were certainly Hectors in Aberdeen in the 1500's. Connecting them to the family tree is another matter.
