Jane,
I just found an A.T. Hector that served in a Texas Confederate unit during the Civil War.
The only other Hector I found, A.C. Hector, was actually a misprint of A.T. Hector.
In a conversation with my great aunt last year( she is 91 years old and the g-g-grandaughter of Willis McWilkinson) she stated that Willis served in the Army of the Republic of Texas. He was proud to be a soldier. In 1862 he enlisted as a soldier in Griffin's Infantry Battalion, C.S.A, at the age of 49. Willis took part in the Battle of Galveston in 1863 and died in May of 1863 on Galveston, cause-fever, age 50.
Since Willis help raise Allan Taylor, I would assume he would have cultivated a strong sense of military duty in the boy. That's what I think anyway.
