Please contact me if you have any information about Carl Hecker thank you Carl Hecker March 14, 1827-Decmber 29, 1897 A Nineteenth Century New York Artist and Teacher Carl Hecker is most well known as a beloved teacher of "thousands of artists" and the founder of the Carl Hecker School of Art in New York city, the springboard of some notable careers including those of Frederick Simpson Coburn (1871-1960), Charles William Jefferys (1869-1951), William C. Ostrander (b.1858), and Frederick Strothmann (1879-1958). Carl Hecker was born in Germany on March 14, 1827, the son of Ferdinand and Caroline Hecker. Current research does not reveal the city of his birth, the background of his forebears, nor when either Hecker or his family emigrated to the United States. We can assume by descriptions of his demeanor, musical tastes, and aesthetics that his family were people of innate class if not of inherited wealth or position. He died in Hoboken, New Jersey
