Dear Diane: I noticed your web site after just seaching my own name on Altavista. RE: the Family name of "Ebare" I was born in Chatham ,Ontario in 1946.Chatham is about 50 miles from Detroit, Michigan and north of Lake Erie. I have a sister Pat(1949)& brother Terry(1943).In the Chatham area I had many cousins because my dad had seven siblings in his family. As a child we visited 2 other Ebare families in Detroit often when I was young.I have not kept in touch with that branch of the family. My Dad (Edgar Ebare)(born 1914 Wallaceburg, Ontario)lived on a farm with Dave(1921),Norman(1909),Dauphus (1900),Wallace (1911),Orville (1916),Mary (1922),and Olive (1923).All 5 of my uncles joined the Canadian Army in 1939 when the WW2 started. It was at that time because of a mix up their names were changed to "Ebare" from Hebert. At that time records were not kept too well. (a driver's licence was just brought in about that time). My grandfather kept his name "Hebert" even though his sons had theirs spelled the way it sounded ("H" being silent in the French language). I did some research at the library 20 years ago and found that the Ebare's and Hebert's have always been farmers dating back to the first decendants in 1610 in what was known as Upper and Lower Canada (Ontario & Quebec today). Champlain came to Canada in 1608 and proclaimed it "New France". Two years later Louis and Marie Hebert came from France to settle and become the first farmers in Canada. When the Explorer Champlain moved south to discover Lake Champlain(puting his name on it)It is quite possible some the Hebert family made their way to Vermont and New York States to start your branch of the family. I understand around 1612 more "Hebert's" came from France to join Louis and Marie farming and just might have ventured south. Could go on forever but have to leave for work.
