You may want to check in the area of Gosport, near Southampton, and area of England where there is (and was) a reasonable density of persons with the surname Heather (of English origin) going back some time. Given the location, many of the Heathers were involved in some way with the shipping industry.

Census information (available on line) might prove helpful.
