Jenny, I am just starting out on our family tree and I noticed your message re the Hampshire Heathers. It would appear that my relative, James Heather, was in or around that area in the early/mid 1800s, so I was thinking that he might just be a relative of your William. James was convicted and transported to Port Arthur in Tasmania for his offence. The below info, is all I know of him. whilst he was in England.

James Heather Ref No. 8482 / 8483 Freed 1853
Tried in Surry Newington on the 6th of December 1841, for housebreaking and stealing a watch, the property of Mrs Tidwest of Godalming. Sentenced to 10 years.
