John Barrett HEATH (b.22 Feb 1836 d. 31 Dec 1911) Born in Cabell Co VA. and moved to Tom Twp, Benton Co. Mo with his parents Jonas B. Heath and Margaret Barrett about 1839. He was just about 4 when his father died. Upon coming of age he moved to California where a large number of the Heaths from Jonas B Heath’s family had already moved . He is first found living at age 24 in California next to his eldest sister Louisa (Heath) Burchard in June 1860, enumerated as a single man ‘Jno’ Heath. He married on 16 Sept 1861 in Butte Co. CA. Mary Elizabeth BOULWARE b. Oct 1844 MO. d. between 1900-1910. She was the daughter of Philip Boulware b. 1811 Pike Co IL and his wife Berthenia Bailey b 1816 MO. In the June 1860 census for Hamilton Twp, Butte Co. CA.
In the 1870, 1880 census they are still farming in Butte Co. CA. 1900 census John B. and Mary and 4 children are living together in a household in Hamilton Twp, Butte Co CA. In 1900 they state they’ve been married 40 yrs and have had 9 children, 6 still living. In 1910 census for Hamilton Twp, Butte Co. CA a 74 yr old widowed John B. Heath b. VA is living in the household of his son William Heath and his wife Mary A and their two children Gordon Heath 5 b.CA and Leora Heath 4 b.CA. They say they’ve been married 6 years. John Barrett Heath (middle name in honor of his mother Margaret Barrett) is buried in Gridley-Biggs Cemetery, Butte Co. CA. His obituary in the Gridley Herald dated Dec 30, 1911 read: Pioneer Resident Called by Death. John Barrett Heath, a pioneer resident of Butte County, in the neighborhood of Biggs, died at the home of his son, J.L. Heath in Gridley, Friday morning Dec 29 after an illness of several weeks, at the age of 76 years, 10 mos and 7 days. Mr. Heath was born in VA Feb 22, 1835 and came to California when a boy of 18. He returned to the east but came again to California. He was married in 1861 to Mary Elizabeth Boulware, daughter of Phillip Boulware of Biggs. Deceased was a respected and well-to-do resident of the community and his death in the fullness of years is the culmination of a life of activeness and usefulness. He leaves two sons and four daughters, as follows: Mrs. Maggie Wyle of Ukiah; Mrs. Jennie Hartney of Vancouver B.C.; John L. Heath of Gridley; Miss May Heath of Palermo; W.C. Heath of Biggs and Miss Emma Heath of South America. The funeral will occur from the home of J.L. Heath in Gridley on Sunday, Dec 31 and the interment will take place in Live Oak Cemetery north of town.
