ELIZA ELLEN OWENS was born February 7th, l833, in Frankfort, Ky., and moved with her parents to Sullivan, Indiana, when seven years of age.
On September 9th, l850, she was married to JOSEPH A. JOHNSON, and in l853 they moved to Decatur County, Iowa, and located on a farm in Franklin Township.To them were born seven children, three of whom preceded their parents to that bourne from whence no traveler ever returns.The surviving children are MRS. SARAH J. HEASTON, of Los Angeles, Calif.; JOHN C. JOHNSON, of Leon, Iowa; JOSEPH A. JOHNSON, of Spokane, Wash.; and MRS. N.E. MOTHERWAY, of Pueblo, Colo.
Her husband, JOSEPH A. JOHNSON, died April l4, l884.She was remarried December 20, l903, to J.L. JOHNSON, and moved with him to Sullivan, Indiana, where he died in l9l4.She then returned to her home in Leon, Iowa, where she spent her closing days, death calling her home on the l9th of February, l9l8.Her children, JOHN C. JOHNSON and MRS. MOTHERWAY were with her during life's closing hours.
MRS. JOHNSON was a woman of more than average ability and vivacity, and was identified with many good works during the active days of her life.She and her husband JOSEPH A., were among the charter members of the Presbyterian Church in Garden Grove, Iowa, which was organized June 6th, l856.On the l8th of February, l87l, she moved her membership by letter to the Presbyterian Church, of Leon, Iowa.For 62 years she has been a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church, an exemplary Christian, whose chief aim was a higher and nobler life.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. C.S. Marsolf, at her former home in Leon, and she was laid to rest by the side of her husband, JOSEPH A., in the Johnson Cemetery in Franklin Township, Decatur County, Iowa.
