Dr. Heard Dies
Goree: Funeral is tentatively as here Thursday for Dr. E. F. (ELI) HEARD, Goree physician and surgeon who died Tuesday in Doctors Memorial Hospital at Dallas. He was 81.

A son, CHARLES P. HEARD, of Abilene said complications set in after Dr. Heard underwent surgery about two months ago in General Hospital at Wichita Falls. He had practiced medicine in Goree after coming here from Georgia about 53 years ago. Dr. Heard estimated in a newspaper interview 10 years ago, that he had delivered some 2000 babies since coming here. He practiced medicine on a limited basis until six months ago.

In 1953 Dr. Heard and Dr. W. M. TAYLOR were joint honorees in a Goree community celebration. At that time they had served the people of Goree a total of 100 years. Dr. Heard was graduated from Georgia Medical School in Atlanta in 1902. He and Dr. Taylor were partners for many years after Dr. Taylor came here in 1907.

Dr. Heard was born April 21, 1878 at Marietta, Georgia and was married to Miss SIDNEY PARKS in 1904.

The nearest hospital to Goree when Dr. Heard came here was one at Fort Worth. He once recalled that emergency operations were often by the dim light of a kerosene lamp and doctors traveled miles by horse or horse and buggy on rough roads.

Surviving are his wife; son CHARLES of 1258 Ross Ave., Abilene; daughters Mrs. TEMPLE DICKSON of Sweetwater and Mrs. W. S. RICHTER of Dallas, and five grandchildren.
