While researching a Sept. 1990 edition of the Onarga Leader-Review newspaper in Iroquois County, Illinois, I came across an article and picture of a tombstone. The tombstone had been used as a fireplace hearth and was discovered during a remodeling project. The stone reads, “Ellen Carroll, the beloved wife of Martin Healley, who departed this life Nov. 4, 1862, aged 35. Born in the parish of Jermstown, County Meath, Ireland. May she rest in peace. Amen.”
The owners of the house had no idea where the stone came from. However, there existed a considerable Irish population in nearby Gilman, IL. at the time.
