Thank you very much indeed for the information. That is absolutely correct and not at all a red herring. Jessie was his second wife. They married in 1880. A very big age difference!
Actually I made a mistake with Jessie's Surname. Jessie was Jessie HALL and not Jessie HEALL. I have a birth certificate for Hugh RENNIE. It was hand-written and it was a very fancy, curly "H". Hence the mistake.
There is a lot of confusion about the parentage of the children. Some of them are the children of John RENNIE Jnr. He was widowed before the 1881 Census. Is that the correct verb? I know a man is a widower.
