Laura,
Ralph Drake who was related to Stilwell, Heady and Drake families researched these families and some of his information came from his father and other relatives. I have a photocopy of some of his reasearch called Two Branches of The Bennett Family of Elk Creek. He does have some information that is not correct, But on Reason/Reese Bennett Ralph is correct that Stilwell Heady was the father and Matilda Drake the mother. This is part of what Ralph wrote..It has in it a great lesson for everyone who knows about it, if we will lift its real significance above the level of gossip and judgement and apply empathy for all of its characters. Matilda Drake born 13 June 1782, in 1806 married Basil Bennett, who was born 1782. They lived near Fairfield on Coxes Creek.....Tradition says that Matilda visited relatives in TN. when her son Reason was born in 1804, before her marriage to Basil Bennett..When Matilda and Basil married they gave Reason or Reese the name of Bennett. Whatever the understanding between Matilda and Basil may have been it became a emotional problem so severe for Basil that it became a problem for Matilda, Basil, & Reason. About 1812 when Reason was about 8 years old, it was agreed that the boy's real father take him. This was not a problem because his real father lived a few minutes walk across the fields for the boy and his mother could see him often...Ralph goes on with more information to long to give her, but later a Bennett reunion was held and the family of Reason was not invited because he WAS NOT A BENNETT and his family was upset... later Ralph tells about his Aunt Anna Humphrey and she was one who told Ralph Reason's real father was as she called him Uncle Still or Stillwell Heady.
