Hi James
While I'm not 100% sold on the Eddy name. This is what I recently ran into in southern Ill. while doing some research. Tower Hill Ill. is were my lost branch of the Heady family landed after Spencer county Ind.. I visited the Methodist Church there, that Winfield Scott Heady my G-Grandfather and the Sibbitt family help build. Winfield lost his life in its construction. Most of the some 20 church members are now in the late 80's and 90's. There is a stain glass window in the church in memory of Winfield Scott Heady with his name printed on it spelling (Heady). However in talking with the church members they didn't recall any Headys that ever lived in the area. One elderly gentleman spoke up and said, but we did have a lot of Eddys. In Winfield married documents the name is spelled Headey which would have been pronouced closer to Eddy than Heady. I've always been told we were German or rather Dutch. I've also heard the Lafayette story from a old family chats, but I was to young at the time to remember the story. The Braun or Brown married into the Sibbitt side of my family. Thomas is my 5th great grandfather which may make me the closest living male realitive to Thomas, maybe not? but not a expert, but Eddy maybe closer to the truth than anyone knows. This I can tell you for fact the Heady or Eddys from my side of the family are fearsly independent. If you take pictures of myself,my fathers,my grandfathers and G-grandfather at about 25 years of age and put them together there is little or no difference, which is almost scary.
