Samuel B. HAZLETT or CAZALET, B. 1847 NY
Posted by: david Cazalet (ID *****4564) Date: November 01, 2005 at 08:24:19
  of 1008

Samuel B. CAZALET attended the Tin Smith's ball with William and Nathaniel CAZALET in Dec. 1876. For a long time I could find no other mention of Samuel. Then, I was researching the second wife of John A. CAZALET, b. 1829-31 in NY (Sophie LUNGREN), and found her living with Samuel HAZLITT at 89 Fourth St., Brooklyn, NY in the 1910 Census.
In 1910 Samuel is married for 25 years to Lottie R. (?), b. abt. 1863 NY. They have two children: John, b. July 1890, and Veronica, b. Aug. 1892. Sophie Lundgren Is a widow, b. abt. 1853 Sweden and three children: Katie?, Rosalie?, Agha?
In the 1900 Census Samuel HEAZBETTE is living at 191 Fifth Ave., Brooklyn with his wife (can't read first name), John and Veronica.
In the 1870 Census there is a Samuel HAZLET in the 20th Ward of NYC. He was born in 1847, but his wife is Mary, b. 1847 in Ireland. They have a one-year old son, Samuel.
In the 1920 Census Samuel HAZELTT lives at 326 Sixth Ave. in Brooklyn. He is a janitor in an aparment house. Son John is a WWI vet and an electrician. Daughter Veronica has married Andrew FROMEN, b. 1887, and they have two children: Dorothy, b. 1915 and Veronica, b. 1917.
In 1930 Samuel HAZLETT still lives at 326 Sixth Ave. in Brooklyn. He is 71 and Lottie is 67. Andrew Fromen has died, but Veronica and the children still live with them. John is 41 and still an electrician.
I also found a three-year old Samuel B. HOZLET living with the Robert GITTY family in Newtown, Queens, in the 1850 Census.
Samuel's name is spelled Haslett on his death certificate. He died on Aug. 11, 1936.
It seems probable that Samuel was the son of John A. CAZALET, but all John's other children remained CAZALET, CASLETT, CAZLET, ETC.
John's father may have been born in NJ likely about 1790 to 1815. His mother may have been born in Ireland or NY.
There are many connections between the Cazalets and NJ, but I cannot find any Cazalets in any records in New Jersey, except Thomas Cazalet (John's son) who lived and died in Kerney, Hudson County.
There is an interesting family of HAZLETTS living in (Keyport) Raritan, Monmouth County, NJ in the 1860 Census. They were all born in NY. John, b. 1798, Jane, b. 1804, Mary, b. 1826, Elizabeth, b. 1829, George, b. 1842, Laura, b. 1844, Ellen, b. 1924, and Lenor,b. 1847. They are the right age to be John A. Cazalet's family and they are from NY and John would be old enough in 1860 to be out on his own. Also George is a prominent Cazalet family name, but they is all hopefulness and not evidence.
Can anyone help me sort this out?
Thank you.
