Crawford Hazard b. 1800 d. 1868 Michigan
I'm trying to find information about Crawford Hazard (b.1800 d.1868) who came to Berrien County, Michigan in mid-1830's from New York state. He apparently worked for a NY firm, Smith and Merrick, who owned a lot of land southwest Michigan.Crawford Hazard is recorded to have been sent to Michigan as part of a four man crew to clear land and eventually became one of the first settlers of Bainbridge Township, Berrien County, MI.
It's possible that Crawford came from the Chenango County, NY area because one of the other early settlers of the area was a man named Jehiel Enos who named Bainbridge Township for his home town of Bainbridge in Chenango County.Possibly these men came from the same area of NY.Also, other NY settlers came from Yates County, NY so he may have come from that area.
Crawford is buried in a cemetery in Bainbridge Township, MI.His tombstone reads:Died 11-3-1868, 68 years 6 months. His wife may have had the first name of Alinda.Crawford had two daughters Martha and Merietta who married brothers Nathaniel and Daniel Brant, sons of another early settler of Bainbridge Township, Simeon Brant (my gggg-grandfather).
I'm also trying to connect Crawford Hazard to the Rhode Island Hazards because I believe that Simeon Brant's father, also Simeon, was born in Westerly, RI in 1758.The first Simeon's name was likely Brand rather than Brant.
Sorry this is so long, but if you know any information about Crawford's family line I'd appreciate it.
