Hello Dan,
I would first hop to the other side of the 'Brickwall' and trace forward. Go to this site http://uk.geocities.com/fnsnclr@btinternet.com/genealogy/Caithness/Introduction.htm
and scroll down to "Sutherland of Forse", and you find that Nodingham/Nothingham and Nottingham are all the same place.
Find out as much as you can about the period your relative lived there. Then contact researchers in that area. For YDNA tracing go to this site next http://www.worldfamilies.net/

It's only a start but should get the ball rolling back toward your Nodington Hayward.
