This is one of the prime examples why dna testing has to be carried out eventually on all Haywards. The families mentioned I have come across many many times in researching my own line, and may still be related to them in the distant past.
All the Haywards in the USA, Australia and Great Britain will eventually come to that 'brick wall' with the paperwork trail, and have to confirm
a) the existing paperwork and
b) go beyond the time of records
This is because the name Hayward, (and variants), like most European surnames, is an occupational name and therefore the groups of families will be many, and across many nationalities.
There is one excellent site that will explain all the intricacies of dna testing, that is independent of the many testing companies, and that is 'dna-forums'.
Type the name into your search engine and save the address for future reference.
The 3 modern rules for genealogy are...
1. The paper work trail can only be confirmed by dna testing.
2. DNA testing only works if you have already started the paperwork trail.
3. Be prepared for suprises.

and above all have fun with genealogy...
