Jacob Myers started the very first scheduled riverboat service in Pittsburgh October 14 1793. He was related to the Gratz family who are related to the Gist family when Benjamin Gratz married Christopher Gist's daughter Maria Gist.
All these families are well recorded in several books. I really can't tell if your Hays family is the same Hays family of my family. I should send you the list of the Aztec Club members to see if you see anyone you might know.
