I just want to let you know the area you are talking about is just north of Pittsburgh and in the greater Pittsburgh area. I have Hays family in both Pittsburgh and Baltimore and I know they are in the Pittsburgh area in the late 1700's. They were both riverboat operators and merchants. Butler Pa was at the start of the canal system in PA that allowed canal boats to go North to Buffalo and East to Harrisburg over a special tram system.

I would not have answered this but I have heard of the Cortez name before connected to the family. Although I am sure it's a coincidence.
