Eli Hays and wife Sophronia were residents of Winnebago County Illinois having come from Indiana according to the book "THE PIONEERS OF WINNEBAGO COUNTY AND BOONE COUNTIES, ILLINOIS WHO CAME BEFORE 1841". They were members of the CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH and Sophronia died March 21, 1839. I have found a record of an Eli Hays marrying Naomi Curtis in Beloit Wisconsin in the fall of 1843. Census records for Wisconsin show Eli and Naomi Hays near Berlin Wisconsin. Eli died March 12, 1875 and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Berlin. Naomi buried alongside was born in 1804 and died Nov. 22, 1878. An article about her stated in her last years of failing health she believed friends were trying to poison her. She literally starved herself to death. My interest in Eli Hays is that if this is the same man, he had operated a tavern (inn) in the Village of Pecatonic laid out by Stephen Mack which we are trying to rebuild.
