Looking for family info on Ephraim Hayes or Hays (spelling both ways from 1870 & 1880 Census) He is the father of George Washington b. 04 Mar 1861. This is all we have; a handwritten note by George's grandson Robert Carlton Hayes. Grandfather, born in Kentucky (1870 states KY, 1880 Census record states TN - couldn't find in any other Census records )and family was ordered out of Schuyler, Missouri when the Civil War started. Grandpa took the older children and household goods in the wagon headed to Illinois. Grandma (Agnes Seward), my father George, and his sister Alice on the train. Grandma was expecting another baby anytime. Too sick on the train and they put her off the train in the night at a small town called Watago, IL. When some one found her next morning, she was dead and her baby was wrapped in her apron and was dead too. Oldest son (William)Henry b. 05 Aug 1844 sent for and buried her. Ephraim and family lived in Walnut Grove with mother's family (I first thought Agnes' family, but perhaps Ephraim's mother?) Ephraim married Jane Eastlick or Eastlich, and moved to CA. Granddad (Ephraim) had black eyes, brown hair and linen duster. At 14, he wanted Dad (George) to come to CA. At 14, Dad and bro Henry moved to MN.

Ephraim & Agnes: William Henry, Edd Madison, James Monroe, Isaiah Slidum, Mary, Alice, George, Baby
Ephraim & (Sarah)Jane: all born in Illinois: Wallace, Estella, Franklin, Burgess born in CA.
