Hello John -
We have been researching the descendents of John Bishop II (1739-1828). He had 21 children (from two wives) and his youngest child (with his 2nd wife Catherine Iden) was a daughter named Catherine Bishop and she married Richard Hays and they lived in Pike Co. IL.
Below are some excerpts pertaining to Catherine Bishop and her husband Richard Hays from Dr. Samuel Bishop's book "Bishop and Lake Families" published in 1898:
"Catherine Bishop, youngest daughter and twenty-first child of John Bishop II, born in Fauquier county Virginia, March 4, 1806, was married to Richard Hays, May 1830. Mr. Hays was born in Jefferson Co. OH June 30, 1806. To his marriage to Miss Catherine Bishop, ten children were born, Albert in the year 1832; Lenora, 1834; Theodore, 1836; Cicero, 1837; Almira, 1839; Emily, 1841; Mary, 1843; and Pulaski, 1845........Albert was married in 1863, and to him ten children were born......Mr. (Richard) Hays moved from Ohio to Pike County Illinois in the fall of 1846, where he died December 4, 1876 having been gored to death by a vicious bull...."
In case you have not seen the obituary of Catherine Bishop Hays, I have provided it below:
Obituary from the Barry Adage newspaper (Barry, Pike County, IL) Friday Dec. 14, 1884: "Mrs. Catharine Hays, a relict of the late Richard Hays, of Hadley Twp., died at the residence of her son, Albert, last Wednesday at the age of 78 years. About a week ago, she received a fall and was injured to such an extent that she failed to recover. Mrs. Hays' maiden name was Bishop, and she was a native of Virginia. In company with her husband and family, she came to Illinois from Ohio in 1846 and since that date has been a resident of Pike Co. She was the mother of a large family, a portion of which survives her. The funeral will take place today."
Below is a short biography of Albert E. Hays that appeared in 1880 Pike County History by Chas. C. Chapman & Co:
"Albert E. Hays, farmer, sec. 16; P. O., Cool Bank; was born in Franklin county, O., Oct. 27, 1832. In 1846 he came with his parents to this county, and in 1864 was married to Margaret Pierce, who died in the fall of 1867, leaving one child, Wm. In 1870 he married Mabel Norris, and their children are: Lillian, May, Oscar N., Kate and Bertie E. Mr. H. owns 80 acres of land, and is a Greenbacker."
Pike Co. IL marriage records indicate that Albert Hays married Margaret Pierce on 18 Oct. 1863.
Census records indicate that William Hays was born circa 1865 in IL. Some of his brothers and sisters seem to have been born in KS, so the family may have lived there circa 1871 to 1876.
Hope this information is useful.
