Rutherford B. Hayes
Rutherford B. Hayes. 19th President of the United States, was born in Deleware, Ohio, Oct. 4 1822, almost 3 months after the death of his father Rutherford Hayes. His ancestry on both paternal and maternal sides was of the most honorable character. It can be traced, it is said, as far back as 1280, when Hayes and Rutherford were two Scottish chieftains, fighting side by side with Baliol, William Wallace, and Robert Bruce. Both families belong to nobility, owned expensive estates and had a large following. Misfortune overtaking the family, George Hayes left Scotland and in 1680, settled in Windsor, CT. His son George was born in Windsor, CT., and remained there for life.Daniel Hayes, son of George, married Sarah Lee, and lived there from the time of his marriage until the time of his death in Simsbury, CT. Ezekiel, son of Daniel was born in 1724, and was a manufacturer of scythes at Bradford, CT. Rutherford, son of Ezekiel and grandfather of Pres. Hayes was born in New Haven, in Aug. 1756. He emigrated to Vermont, settling in Brattleboro. Here his son, Rutherford, father of the Pres., was born. He married in Sept. 1813 to Sophia Birchard, of Wilmington, VT, whose ancestor emigrated from CT, they having been among the wealthiest families of Norwich. Her ancestory on the male side is traced back to 1635, to John Birchard, one of the principal founder of Norwich. Both of her grandfather were soldier of the Rev.
After the close of the War of 1812, Rutherford Hayes moved to Ohio. He decided to move to Delaware, Ohio where they arrived in 1817. He died July 22, 1822, less then 3 months before the birth of his son, Rutherford B. Hayes (The President of the United States).
