Dear Benjean,
Thanks for writing. In the past year, in an attempt to find my great grandfather, the father of William David Marion Hays, I have looked at EVERY William Hays (Hayes/Hayze/Hayse/Hayz/Hase/etc.) in Texas and Indian Territory from the 1840 through the 1900 Census trying to find one who was born in Missouri with a wife born in Arkansas. No luck. Now I'm beginning to think that his name wasn't William, after all.The only Hays who falls within these parameters is one C.C. Hays born in Missouri about 1836 with a wife named Rachel from Arkansas and a son named William, 2 yrs. in the 1860 Jack Co., TX Census, who is possibly my grandfather. (The name and age fit.) They also had an infant son, James.I have not yet been able to locate C.C. Hays in any earlier census in Texas or Missouri, and this Hays family disappears entirely in the 1870 Census. By 1880, however, they reappear in Parker Co., TX with James helping to work the farm and three daughters, Francis, Mary and Emma.My 22 yr. old newlywed grandfather is living next to his in-laws in nearby Wise County just a "stone's throw" from his own possible family - I may never know for sure!
It's possible that WDM's father - whomever he may prove to be - is related to John Wesley Hays.I know there are a couple of John Wesleys on the LDS Family Search site and I've noted the name in my census wanderings. If I can ever get out of Texas and back to Missouri I'll look for him.Barbara Hays Cook, Sacramento, Ca [email protected].
