Hi Beverly, I saw your post come in yesterday in response to my post on the Scotland group, but thought I'd respond in the Hay Family group to keep everything together. It seems as though my John Hay (b1846) may indeed be the grandson of John Hay and Jean Watson - via John's father William Hay (b1817 in Baldernock). This is, however yet to be proven definitively, other than the correlation in location and birth year. I have got my uncle (his name is of course, John Hay!) on the ground near Glasgow, and he's planning to make a trip to visit some cemeteries for me in the next few weeks, so I'm hoping for good things out of that. I'm in Australia, so like you, it's a bit tricky to do onsite visits! Now the good news is that if you do a search in this forum for 'Baldernock', you will come across a discussion between myself and Peter Hay (also from Australia) about a year ago. Peter has done a great deal of work in this area, and provided me with some family tree diagrams he's constructed after obtaining almost all records he could get his hands on from scotlandspeople.com for Hays in Baldernock and surrounds. Specifically, he's been able to construct a tree back to a marriage in 1734 (Robert Hay to Agnes Douglass), two generations before John and Jean Watson. I'd recommend having a read through these postings, and then if you like I'll email what I got from Peter to you - I'm sure he wouldn't mind. At last contact with Peter he was off chasing a different part of his tree, so I can take the load off him for a bit, perhaps! Peter's findings also seem to corroborate Mandy's details in her response. Peter, if you're reading this, feel free to trump me anytime! Now, onto the Inglis's... My William Hay (b1817 in Baldernock) married Elizabeth Steel Inglis on July 1st, 1845. William died Dec. 28, 1856, and his death certificate states the Informant and Undertaker was John Inglis, specifically noted as being his brother-in-law. In addition, I have the birth certificates for William and Elizabeth's children, which state the witnesses to the birth - of whom two were Inglises: the witnesses for Robert (b1847) were Hugh Hay and William Inglis; and for Janet Erskine (b1850) were John Hay and James Inglis. That's pretty much it for me as for my knowledge of the Inglis's. I suspect chasing the Inglis's may get tricky seeing as the origin of the surname as you probably know is from the Scots word for the 'English'. So not all Inglis's are necessarily related. What a bugger eh? Anyway, I've prattled for long enough now - let me know how you go, won't you? Cheers, Tim Notify Administrator about this message?
