Greetings, especially to my first cousin Patrick!

The House of the Seven Gables is based upon his family's curse. Also, in The Custom House (an introduction to the Scarlet Letter), Nathaniel expresses his disapproval of his great-grandfather's (Judge John's) acts and he attempts to 'remove' the family curse:

"At all events, I, the present writer, as their representative, hereby take shame upon myself for their sakes, and pray that any curse incurred by them--as I have heard, and as the dreary and unprosperous condition of the race, for many a long year back, would argue to exist--may be now and henceforth removed."

Also, our particular Pittsburgh Hawthorne Family is most likely NOT even descended from Judge John's.
Some evidence that I have is a photo of James Mark Hawthorn's (great-great-grandfather's) gravestone from around 1900 HAS the 'w' but not the "e". Nathaniel added the "w" after finishing college to disassociate himself from his ancestors, but always had the "e".

Patrick, you mention about having symptoms of the curse. Where can this list of symptoms be found?
Also, wouldn't a curse only travel downward to descendants?

On a lighter note, I always thought the "Hawthorne Beer Gut" was the only symptom of a curse... ha ha, but I reversed mine by changing my diet... (almost gone).

Cheers,
