Hawthorne family curse

I've heard that there is supposed to be a curse on the family of the Judge Hathorne who presided at the Salem witch trials. I've heard that this is the reason Nathaniel added the "w" in his name--"to honor the witch and thereby escape the curse". Has anyone else heard of this? Is it documented somewhere?
