My ggggrandfather was Christian Hause who died in Rockingham Co., Virginia on 12 Mar 1853. His death record says that "Christian Hawse" was 100 years, 4 months, & 12 days old. That means that he was born in Dec 1752. He was buried in Turley Cemetery, Turleytown, Rockingham Co., Virginia. That is five miles from Singers Glen. Where did you find the Singers Glen death location?
Christian would have been at a prime military age in 1777. The Pennsylvania Militia was organized in March 17, 1777 and required compulsory enrollment of all able-bodied white males between the ages of 18 and 53. A “Christian Haasse” served on active duty in the Northampton Co. Pennsylvania Militia, during the Revolutionary War. He was substituting for David Brucker. That Christian was probably the one that later moved to the South Branch of the Potomac River in Hampshire Co., (West) Virginia. He appears there in the 1840 census while my ancestor appeared in the 1840 Rockingham Co., Virginia census.
A “Christian Haas” or “Christian Haus” served on active duty in the Third Pennsylvania Regiment. A “Christian Hass” was on inactive duty in the Lancaster Co. Militia. Do you know if any of these are Otto’s son?
While it was still visible, his tombstone in the Turley Cemetery said “Christian Haas”. I record him as “Hause” since the earlier Rockingham Co. records spelled it that way.
Neither the 1790 nor the 1800 census are available for Virginia and Christian did not seem to own property then. The 1810 census shows "Christian Hause, Sen." in Rockingham Co., Virginia -- 1 male and 1 female over 45 years of age. Also, Israel Hause is listed -- 1 male and 1 female between 26 & 45 years of age and one male under 10. The 1820 census shows "Christian Hawse" in Rockingham Co., Virginia --one male and one female over 45 years of age; farmer. Israel Hawse is also listed -- 1 male and 1 female between 26 & 45 years of age, 1 male under 10, one male between 10 & 16, and 1 female under 10; farmer. I, like you, suspect that Israel was a son of Christian Sr.'s since he lived nearby.
The 1830 census shows "Christopher Hause, Sr." in Rockingham Co., Virginia --one male and one female between 70 and 80 years of age. Also shown is “Christina Hause” -- 1 male between 15 & 20, 1 male between 20 & 30, and 1 female between 40 & 50. Israel has disappeared from this census and I have been unable to locate him elsewhere, although I did an extensive search for him. Do you have any other information about Israel?
The 1840 census shows a person between 80 -90 years of age living with Christian Hawse Jr. in Rockingham Co. The 1850 census shows "Christian Haws" in Harrisonburg Twp., Rockingham Co., Virginia -- 98 years old, farmer, born in Pennsylvania, living with his son, Christian Jr.
I have never seen Christian’s middle name “Otto”. I have also never seen his wife’s name “Margaret “. In addition, I did not know that he was born in Philadelphia. Could he have been born in German Town before it became part of Philadelphia? Where did you find them?
I had been unable to find Christian’s father. How did you find Otto and his wife Juditha? Do you know anything more about them?
It seems logical that Christian’s father would have immigrated from the Palatine before Christian was born. I see that an "Otto Haasse" arrived in Philadelphia on 5 Sep 1751 on the Ship Elizabeth from Rotterdam via Cowes, England. However, the “Haasse” spelling surprises me. I had come to believe that the German spelling was originally “Haus”, “Hauss”, “Hause”, “Hass”, or “Haas”.
As you know, Christian had a son named Christian Hawse, called “Christly”. He was born on 15 Dec 1784. In the record of his marriage to Susannah Bowman in 1809, Christian Jr. was listed as "Haase". The 1810 census shows "Christian Hause, Jun." in Rockingham Co., Virginia -- 1 male and 1 female between 16 & 26 years old and one male under 10. The 1820 census shows "Christian Hawse, Jr." in Rockingham Co., Virginia -- 1 male and 1 female between 26 & 45 years old, 2 males under 10, 1 male between 10 & 16, and 2 females under 10; farmer. The 1830 census shows "Christopher Hause, Jr." in Rockingham Co., Virginia -- 1 male between 40 & 50 and 1 female between 30 & 40 years old, 2 females between 5 & 10, 3 males and 1 female between 15 & 20, and 1 male between 20 & 30. The 1840 census shows "Christian Hawse, Jr." in Rockingham Co., Virginia -- 1 male between 50 & 60 years old, and 1 female between 40 & 50 years old, 1 male between 10 & 15, 1 female between 16 & 20, 1 female between 20 & 30, and one male between 80 & 90 (i.e., Christian Sr.). The 1850 census shows "Christian Haws" in Harrisonburg Twp., Rockingham Co., Virginia -- 66 years old, farmer, value of real estate $1700, born in Pennsylvania, married to Susanna. The 1870 census shows "Chrisley Haas" in Linville Twp., Rockingham Co., Virginia -- 84 years old, born in Virginia.
Christly died in Brush Twp., Rockingham Co., Virginia on 24 Jul 1858. His death record says that "Christian Hawse" was 86 years old. Christian and Susannah “Hawse” are buried in the Reedy Family Cemetery, Linville, Rockingham Co., Virginia. I have visited their tombstones.
I suspect that Christian Sr. also had a daughter named Elizabeth, born 13 September 1781 in Pennsylvania. Elizabeth married John Minnich in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania circa 1790. Elizabeth died on 18 Apr 1857 in Caroline City, Virginia. I do not know where Caroline City was. (It seems to no longer exist.) I remember reading somewhere that John and Elizabeth Minnich moved to Rockingham Co. where they raised most of their nine children. I have not had an opportunity to verify this. I would welcome help.
Christly and Susannah had five children, one of which was David who was my gggrandfather. He moved his family to Champaign Co., Ohio in 1853. There, my family line changed the spelling of our name to “Hawes”.
