Hi John,
My name is Edmund Gawrelak and I seen your message in response to a surname message board and was intrigued because of how you pronounced the last name. My father said that was how our last name was pronounced in Polish. When my grandfather came here from Poland he supposedly changed three letters in our name to Gawrylak, this is what is on their marriage license, by the time my grandmother received her citizenship papers it was at the spelling you see now. We pronounce it gor-lack. but when we went to the Polish store when I was young the owner would pronounce it gar-vel-ek. so I was wondering if you had any more information on the hawryluk surname in Russia-Poland and if you think I may be on the right track, as my father and grandfather are both passed and we don't seem to have any relatives from his side.
So please let me know if you can help with some info. My grandfather's name was Jan Gawrylak and he married Marya Szczubialka in Detroit, MI in 1919. His birth date was May 7, 1891, in Russia-Poland. His father's name was Adam and his mother was (Alygandra Beamczyk.?????) the writing is fading on the license.
Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you.
