The family of Capt Abner Hawley is the subject of a genealogy compiled by Sarah Gillespie Huftalen in the 1940's, and it is available on Ancestry.com. She lists three sons of Abner; Abner Jr, James and Thomas. There were most probably other children. Her ancestor was Thomas and is the focus of her manuscript. I have transcribed the descendants of James and Thomas on RootsWeb, titled eliassillhawley. Thomas, son of Abner, seems to be in Victor, Ontario Co, NY, but moved to Michigan. His sons find homes in Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, and Oregon. Milton, son of James, was born 1802 in New York, married in 1826 in Ohio, and died 1867 in Illinois. I am also aware of three unrelated Hawley families living in Delaware County, NY, at the same time period. I believe the wife of one Harvey Hawley was Mercy Harvey Sprague, a widow. You mentioned a Mercy Sprague in your post. Their son Harvey Jr was born around 1785 in Harvard, NY, and died around 1844 in Delaware County. However, I don't see the name of William in these files. We have some evidence in DNA testing to prove who is related to which group. If you have a male candidate with the Hawley surname, you can explore that option, too.
