(my)William was a Carpenter. Birth unknown, but he married Margaret Thompson of Grafton in Marton-cum-Grafton on 23/6/1702. Children (all born in Goldsborough) were Rachel (1705), William (1706), Sarah (married 1728), Martin (1712), John (1715), Richard (1718) and Thomas (1718). William must have been the brother of your John, as their father (a yeoman)left a will in 1706 mentioning: -
Wife Ann (to have presonal estate)
Son Martin - eldest son - £35
Son William - second son - £40
Son John - youngest son £45
The birth of all this family is unknown. Martin was a draper and married Rachel Bake in Knaresborough in 1690 and died in 1713. I knew nothing of your John. There was another sibling apparently, as "Sarah, daughter of William Hawkrid" dies in 1686.
My father did this bit of research a long time ago and I am not quite sure how far he trawled to find these births. The family can't have come from far however. here is the will of a Martin Hawkrigg in 1667 (?where - I presume Goldsborough) which mentions cousin William (executor), cousins Mary Simpson, Allice Gibson and Luke Kindalle, sister Isabell Spence, wife Ann, and cousins Sarah Aspinall and Michael Simpson. He must have had no children. Martin is certainly the family name. Even Richard (born 1718)has a son called Martin. I understand that only the BTs go back this far in Goldsborough, and that these are fragmentary.
