My Great Grand father was James Ballou Hawkins(Born in July 10 1848 in Utica,NY) younger brother Thomas Ballou Hawkins . So, I would say were cousins. Their father Martin came to the US at the age of 13. He passage was paid for by the Butterfield Brothers to be a stage driver. Martin came from western Ireland and was a accomplished horseman at a young age. Not much else is know about Martin other than he was an orphan at the time he came to the US. Dan Hawkins in Alaska had gone to Ireland and had some family research done and no records were found before Martin. Martin and Henrietta Ballou (She had a twin sister named Julietta and they were first cousins to President Garfield, their father was Levi Ballou and the Ballou family were among the early settlers of Connecticut) married (no date of marriage)and had five children, Thomas Ballou, James Ballou, Sarah Ellen (died as a young adult?), William Nelson, and a baby that died shortly after birth named Julietta. Martin died about 1857 while running a stage down to Kentucky. It was believed to be at the hands of Indians since it was still wild territory. After that Henrietta follows here sister Julietta and her husband to Illinois. Henrietta eventully remarries a Jerome Wright in 1860. I have that Thomas moved south around late 1870 following his brother James. James joins the Texas Rangers under Rufus Perry for about 6 years and makes his way back up to Miles City, Montana where he is eventually is joined by his brother William. James had told his daughter Nannie Sarah Hawkins (King) my grandmother that there probably isn't a Hawkins in Texas that's not a relative since Thomas had eight boy (one may have died young?) and two girls. Until now I didn't have his wifes name (thank you). I have say I was surprised to see a response after so much time I had almost given up. I have gotten most of my in depth family info from Dan Hawkins my mothers first cousin but haven't heard from him in quite some time. He had given me som contacts in Texas and Arizona. There was a William F. in San Saba, TX and a Marilyn Bowie in Cave Creek, AZ also Roland & Cindy in San Saba, TX. I hadn't been working on the genealogy for quite some time since I was taking care of my mother who past away earlier this year. If you would like I could send on more info. And I would love to be able to fill in more family history as well.
