From the book "What Did They Mean By That?" by Paul Drake -
"Indenture:early, a covenant or agreement so named because the counterparts were indented or were cut (or torn) in an unusual pattern to prevent alteration; early, a document stating a debt in time and (or) service owed by one person to another, quite usually executed where transportation or training was to be exchanged for labor and time; recently, a deed or agreement, e.g. 'His obligation to serve Captain Smith for four years was set forth in the indenture."
