RE:John Hawkins, 1781 Tax list Orange Co, NC
Information on your particular question, I think the John Hawkins on the 1781 tax list is the father of the John Hawkins who married Polly Goodman. John Hawkins lived in St Asaph's District in 1779.I know he was on the tax list for that district in 1785.He was Justice of the Peace in Orange County in 1777.He was appointed Sheriff for 1787 and died that same year drowning in the Haw River. In 1800, after the death of his wife Mary, his two sons, John and Hardress divided his property. It's this son John who married Polly Goodman. He sold his share of his property in Nov 1800 to Samuel Dick and carried a number of land transactions with John Goodman in Rowan County. He married Polly Goodman in 1796 in Rowan County. After her death, he married Elizabeth Varner daughter of Jacob Varner in Rowan County. He and his family later moved to Marion County IN where he died Sept 24, 1832.
