Ruth Hawkins was born about 1641, died 9 Mar 1715/6, aged 75 years, and is buried in the King's Chapel Burying Ground in Boston. (Robert J. Dunkle and Ann S. Lainhart, comps., _Inscriptions and Records of the Old Cemeteries of Boston_ [Boston: NEHGS, 2000], 747) She was second of the five surviving daughter of James and Mary (Mills) Hawkins.
James Hawkins died 14 Mar 1670, aged 67 years; his wife Mary died 12 Mar 1692, aged 75 years; and both are also buried in Kings Chapel Burying Ground (ibid., 755). James's will may be found in the Suffolk County probate records at 7:42, but the deed of 18 May 1692, by which his daughters AND their husbands, if living, grant their inherited property to his sole surviving son James, recorded in Suffolk Deeds 25:112, is far more helpful. Ruth is named therein as wife of Daniel Fairfield. (These references are from Annie Haven Thwing, _Inhabitants and Estates of the Town of Boston, 1630-1800_, CD-ROM [Boston: NEHGS and Mass. Hist. Soc., 2000], refcode 39804.)
Earlier generations of the Hawkins family receive brief treatment in Austin's _Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island_, 94, and Edward H. West, "The Story of Jane Hawkins," NEHGR 114 (1960): 207-11. (Jane was the mother of James, hence Ruth's grandmother.) The Mills family is described in Pope's _Pioneers of Massachusetts,_ 315, but the records of Boston and Braintree should be consulted for a complete family reconstruction.
Ruth was married to John Marshall, not James, by 1659; the birth record for her first child by this marriage calls him a "Scotishma[n]" (his nationality, not his trade, which was masonry according to Thwing, 44698). Birthdates of their children are found in _A Report of the Record Commissioners Containing Boston Births, Baptisms, Marriages, and Deaths, 1630-1699_, 9th Report of the Record Commissioners (1883):
James, b. 29 Sep 1659. (69)
Mary, b. 2 Jan 1661[/2]. (79)
John, b. 2 Oct 1664. (92)
Thomas, b. 6 Feb 1666[/7]. (101)
Samuel, b. 14 Jul 1669. (111)
Joseph, b. 14 Apr 1672. (123)
The dates of John's death and Ruth's remarriage are uncertain, and neither of her husbands left an epitaph in Boston. Daniel Fairfield was having children by another wife as late as 1 Mar 1677/8, however (ibid., 141), so Ruth must have married him after that date. That marriage produced one known child, a son Daniel, b. 1 Dec 1680. (ibid., 151) The father last appears in a mortgage executed 4 May 1709. (Thwing, 18902, citing Suffolk Deeds, 24:174)
I descend, by the way, from Ruth's older sister Mary, who married John Kneeland by 1659.
