Thanks for your response, Marilyn.
I do not know if Jane and Rebecca were sisters, and have no idea about other sibs. There is just a possibility based on a document I found:
"FAYETTE COUNTY, OHIO-COMMON PLEAS MINUTE BOOK E-1828-1831.
5-15-1828-Nancy Hawkins appointed guardian of her two minor daughters, Rebecca HAWKINS aged 10 yrs. and Jane HAWKINS aged 5 yrs. & 6 mos., heirs of Thomas HAWKINS, dec'd."
This puts my Jane in the right place at the right time, more or less, though she would have been closer to 6 1/2 at that time, according to my somewhat impaired math. And, given the official handwritten records of the day, it would be easy enough to mistake a 6 for a 5.
I know this is not proof of my Jane; there could have been another little Jane Hawkins in Fayette, I suppose.
And I'm sorry I can provide no more info than that.
There is a marriage record for Jane Hawkins and Sidner (Sidney) Brown, 19 Oct 1842, Fayette, Ohio.
About the DNA...have you read about "The Seven Daughters of Eve" by Bryan Sykes of Oxford University? You can find out about it by doing a google search on the title or on "mtDNA", which is that mitochondrial, or matrilineal DNA passed down by mothers to both sons and daughters. Only the daughters pass it on, forever. So, for females you want to do mtDNA studies, (because we don't have a Y chromosome) for males Y-line studies. I think the Y-line gives you more information, if you have a brother or same surname male cousin who is willing to do it. It is fairly costly, $200.00-300.00 a pop, so one has to be very curious, i'd say, to have it done. There are a number of companies that do the work; you can find them on-line in your "DNA" search. They send you a free cheek-swab collection kit, and you pay when you send it in. I don't know who does the best studies. You just have to take a look at what they offer, who gives you the most info for the fee.
One, at least, can put you in touch with other folks with your surname who have done the study, so you can compare your DNA sequences to see if you are closely related. That is simplistic, I know; I don't have a good understanding of the thing myself. I just find it fascinating.
There is also a "Scots DNA" study in the works. And the BYU Molecular Genealogy Project is an important study with free participation, but you have to go to wherever they are drawing blood, and you do not get a report.
Let me know if you want to continue this discussion.
Sincerely,
Konnie
