Got it! and thanks, now it all makes sense.
I tend to doubt that Joseph Hawkins, born 1794 was the same Joseph who married Elizabeth McCrary in Burke County, North Carolina in 1819.And here are some reasons:
1. I can place Joseph's father, William Henley Hawkins, in Missouri around 1800 but then he leaves there and goes to Jackson County, TN by 1805.He returns to Missouri sometime after 1818.This Joseph Hawkins (b. 1794) would have been 6 at the time of the move from Burke County to Missouri and would have been 11 at the time of the move to TN.He would have been 24 when his father left TN and returned to Missouri. My records show Joseph married Prudence Reed about 1840 in Missouri but this has to be a subsequent wife (since son Samuel is born 1827), but I suspect he may have married in TN and then moved back to Missouri with his parents and other siblings.
2. Of the 6 sons of Augustine Hawkins and Elizabeth Henley, I can place 4 of them: John settles in Washington County, Mo; William Henley goes to MO then TN then back to MO; James goes to MO then to TN; Joseph goes to Jackson County, TN with his parents and his sister (wife of Job Morgan). However I have very limited information on the oldest, Augustine "Austin" Hawkins and the youngest son, Richard Hawkins.I have only seen one son of "Austin" and that son is Austin Brittain and his desdendents are still in NC.Also, Austin is mentioned in the letter written by Josiah Wilson Hawkins as "still living in Rutherford County, NC".Other people have contacted me searching for lost Hawkins' in Burke County, and I suspect Augustine "Austin" had more children with Phoebe Brittain than just Austin Brittain. Now, of the youngest son (of Augustine and Elizabeth Henley), Richard:I have no descendents and I have no further information on him (wife, etc.).I have that he was born about 1771 in Maryland. If he lived, I am certain he traveled with the family to NC (he would have been 4 or so). However, on records of the St. Genevieve, Missouri militia (of which older brother John is definately tied to -- John is a Rev. War veteran), I have also found the names, James Hawkins and Richard Hawkins.I suspect these 3 brothers were all part of the Ste. Genevieve militia during the war. Now, if this Richard is our Richard, then I wonder if he remained in Missouri with his brothers or returned to NC (or even perhaps went to TN, although I doubt it).
The point to all of my rambling is:I suspect the Joseph Hawkins who married Elizabeth McCrary in Burke County in 1819 is a son of either Augustine "Austin" or of Richard.
What are your thoughts?
