Our family legend has it that our grandfather (Thomas Edward) and his family came from Liskeard, Cornwall, emigrating to South Africa late 19th cent. My father was William and William would appear to be a family name.
When I was in South West England last year I took the opportunity to have a good look around the churchyard of St Martin's church in Liskeard and after a search I found the gravestones of WILLIAM HAWKE died 1888 aged 67 years and his son WILLIAM HAWKE died 1885 aged 37 years, and William Hawke's Snr wife ELIZABETH HAWKE died 1898 aged 84 years.
I took some photos and can scan them and let you have them if you are interested.
I wish that we could discover more about these Liskeard Hawkes but to hire a geneoligist is so darned expensive!
In the meantime the ultimate Hawke in OUR family - the father of Thomas Edward (our grandfather) and his brother Albert and sister Edith who also emigrated to South Africa remains a mystery. Any suggestions?
