I am trying to find the surname of Sarah who was married to John Haviland. Her surname may have possibly been Bergen. This is the information that I have so far. In the book, The Haviland Genealogy by Josephine C. Frost, originally published in 1914, on p. 44, Mrs. Frost wrote: John Haviland, son of (1) William and Hannah Haviland, d. at Hempstead, Long Island, Oct. 11, 1740. John and his wife Sarah and son John were living in Flushing in 1698 when the census was taken and were listed. I have not found whose daughter his wife was but I am inclined to believe she was a Stoutenburgh, from the names of the children which were foreign to the Haviland family. I now have information from one very familiar with the Stoutenburgh line, that this is not the case. This person writes: "I don't think that Sarah, wife of John Haviland, was a Stoutenburg. In the 1600s, the Stoutenburg family lived in New Amsterdam/New York. The descendants in the early 1700s moved either to New Jersey, Dutchess Co. or Richmond Co. (Staten Island). The first time a Stoutenburg female is named Sarah is in 1720. She was the daughter of Peter Stoutenburg and Margaret Van Varik and was named after her maternal grandmother, Sarah Visboome. The other Sarah Stoutenburgs were born in the 1800s. There were 2 John Havilands living on Long Island about 1700. One was later married to a Sarah Sneathing and had a son born in 1734 named John. The other was married to a Sarah Bergen. You might want to look at the descendants of Hans Bergen. There was a Sarah Bergen who was the daughter of Jan (John) Bergen and Jannetje Denyse. She was named after her paternal grandmother Sarah Rapalje. Stoutenburgs did marry into the Frost family but much later. Josephine Frost also wrote a book on the Frost genealogy in which these marriages are referenced." After receiving this information, I looked again at The Haviland Genealogy by Josephine C. Frost. There are two Bergen’s mentioned in Mrs. Frost’s book, Elizabeth Bergen, p. 77 (mentioned in the minutes of the Mamaroneck M.M.) and Johannis Bergen, p. 57 (named as one of the Executors in the will of a John Haviland.) This John Haviland was the son of the John Haviland and his wife, Sarah (?) mentioned in my first inquiry. This indicates that there was a connection between the two families and that my Sarah (?)may have been of of the Bergen line. Any information will be appreciated.
