Rev. Dr. Samuel Haven of Portsmouth, NH
I have about 70 pages of the original diary written in French to Jean from Ange, dated July 1784 to April 1789. These pages use an old style date (e.g., 5784 = 1784). The Jean in this diary is apparently John Haven (1766-1845), son of Rev. Samuel Haven, of Portsmouth, NH. Also mentioned is Nathanial A. Haven (another son) and his Uncle Jean (John) Appleton. Rev. Haven's first wife was Mehitabel Appleton. Docteur Haven is mentioned many times throughout the diary. Also mentioned is the ship Quai of Sherburne, which was owned by Rev. Haven. Frequently mentioned throughout the diary is "Dragon volant."
If anyone has any information that might further explain the above, or is interested in trying to translate some of this diary, Please let me know.
Thanks,
Tom Ayres
