As a follow-up to all of the interesting origins of the name, the one I heard was that Habe- meant "have" and that a Habermann was one who "had" both land and livestock. This put them higher in the pecking order than just a farmer. I also have one of my ancestors marriages showing her surname as Havermann even though she was born Habermann.

One of the difficulties I have had in tracing my family is that they appear to have been nomads, moving about every generation. When they settled in Pittsburgh there is oral family history to indicate they were visited by relatives from Canada.

They emigrated from the Saarland to America about 1860. The previous generation lived near Helbra in Sachsen-Anhalt. It would be nice to find out if we are all related.
