1985-10-29 Chicago Tribune (IL) CARL MARIA HAUSER, 90, AUSTRIAN ARTIST, NOVELIST Associated Press. Edition: Chicago Tribune
Carl Maria Hauser, 90, one of Austria`s most prominent artists, died Monday, the Austria Press Agency reported.
After more than four decades of near-neglect, Mr. Hauser`s early work regained some international popularity 10 years ago. Critics said his expressionist paintings and drawings of the 1920s reflected some of the dreams and aspiration of Western Europe`s 1970s generation.
He was lesser known as a novelist. But books such as ``The Lost Son`s Story`` and ``The Vampire`` were reasonably popular among German readers.
Born Feb. 2, 1895, in Vienna, Mr. Hauser studied at the Vienna Art Academy. He was a lieutenant in Austria`s Imperial Army from 1914 to 1918, and his first sketches were scenes of action on the front.
Mr. Hauser`s style changed as he matured, and his name became synonymous with the surrealistic ``Magic Realism`` of a small group of Austrian artists. His early fascination with religious motives remained throughout his career.
Mr. Hauser spent most of World War II in Switzerland, going there in 1938, when Austria became a part of Nazi Germany. He spent much of this time in the canton of Ticino, working on frescos and wall mosaics.
After his return to Austria in 1947, he continued to experiment with mosaics and decorated several apartment houses.
He also painted a series of portraits of international and Austrian personalities and designed stage decors for some Viennese theaters. Record Number: 19851029OB8503140057

Alonzo Hauser, a nationally known sculptor most noted for his stone carvings, has died of heart failure at age 79.
Mr. Hauser died Tuesday at North Memorial Medical Center.
Perhaps Mr. Hauser`s best-known work is ``The Source,`` the female figure displayed at the Rice Park fountain in downtown St. Paul for 23 years.
Other works on display in the St. Paul area include a relief of Christ outside the United Church of Christ and a bronze nymph in the Veterans Service Building fountain at the end of the state Capitol mall.
Mr. Hauser grew up in La Crosse, Wis., and dropped out of high school to become a sculptor. He studied at the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee for a short time before moving to New York.
He did stone-carving for the Works Progess Administration during the Roosevelt era, taught at Carleton College in Northfield for two years and founded Macalester College`s art department in 1945. He also worked as a carnival barker for Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous stripper who performed with the Royal American Shows.
Mr. Hauser`s work began with abstract limestone, then progressed to architectual reliefs, life-size bronze busts, unusual terra cotta figures and tiny bronzes depicting nude women who almost always wore high heels. His sculptures often exaggerated hands and feet.
He lived during the early 1970s in Prescott, Wis., and moved in 1974 to Las Cruces, N.M. He returned to Minnesota four years ago when his health began to fail.
``He was a fighter, and he believed in art as something that was a necessary part of humanity,`` said his daughter, Heidi Jasmin of Minneapolis. ``He had a great deal of integrity; money was not the ultimate for him. He felt art was not appreciated.``
Mr. Hauser also is survived by two sons, Michael and Tony of Minneapolis; and a sister, Wynona Hauser Murray of La Crosse. Record Number: 19881201OB8802210028
1994-12-14 Chicago Tribune (IL) U. OF C. SOCIOLOGIST PHILIP HAUSER Edition: Chicago Tribune
Philip M. Hauser, 85, a sociologist and a professor emeritus at the University of Chicago, founded and served as director of its Population Research Center from 1947 to 1979. He was the author of the 1964 desegregation plan for the Chicago public schools.
A resident of the Hyde Park neighborhood, he died Tuesday in a retirement home there. His career of sociological fieldwork began while he was an undergraduate student. He and several U. of C. classmates were assigned to record who attended the funerals of the men killed in the 1929 St. Valentine's Day Massacre. It was part of a study that was published as "Organized Crime in Chicago." He went to the services for Dr. Reinhardt Schwimmer, an optometrist who hung out with the Bugs Moran gang. So few mourners showed up that professor Hauser was asked to help carry the coffin.
Professor Hauser received his master's degree in 1933 and his doctorate in 1938 from U. of C. at a time when the school's professors and brand of social science was being recognized as the Chicago school of sociology. Using the city as their model, they studied and reported on many forms of urban life.
His unique expertise was population, and he furthered it through the positions he held over the next decade. He was with the U.S. Census Bureau from 1938 to 1947 and was its acting director from 1949 to 1950.
In 1947, he joined the U. of C. faculty and taught there on weekends. At the same time, he served as the U.S. representative to the Population Commission for the United Nations. His special concerns were the consequences of racial segregation and overpopulation.
He also was on the board of governors of the Metropolitan Housing and Planning Council of Greater Chicago. He testified in court during the 1980s that the City Council had created a ward map that diluted the voting strength of African-Americans.
In 1963, he was appointed chairman of the advisory panel for the desegregation of the public schools. Its report, which called for major changes, was accepted but not implimented.
In speeches and in his writings, professor Hauser consistently called for the nation to recognize and deal with the changes it had undergone since it was an agrarian, small-town society. He called for universal medical coverage, better housing for the poor, equality in education funding and open occupancy in housing.
His books and other writings included "Government Statistics for Business Use," "Urbanization in Latin America" and "The Population Dilemma."
He was a former president of the American Sociological Association, the American Statistical Association and the Population Association of America.
Survivors include a son, William; a daughter, Martha Hauser Baxter; four grandchildren; a brother; and two sisters.
Plans for services are pending. Record Number: 19941214OB9412140085
