The Haupt (Hope) Family of South Carolina
Posted by: Ray Haupt (ID *****9548) Date: July 23, 2009 at 06:29:21
  of 787

The Hope family of Newberry Co., SC descends from Christian Haupt who settled in the Dutch Fork area in 1777. He appears to be the Christian Haupt who served with the von Knyphausen Regiment of the von Donop Brigade as a Hessian soldier. Christian Haupt was taken prisoner during the Battle of Trenton on Dec. 25, 1776. The 900+ prisoners were taken to a prison camp in Lancaster Co., PA. Christian Haupt was assigned to help work the farm of Georg Lechner in Cocalico Twp., Lancaster Co., PA. Christian Haupt appears to have slipped out (likely with others) in January or February 1777 and migrated down Great Wagon Road to Newberry Co., SC. He would have been in Dutch Fork by April 1777. He would later offer his services to the Dutch Fork Militia.
