Actually, I think you'll find that Johannes Hauger/Hager b 1749 was born in New Jersey; his father Jonathan and his grandfather Johann Jacob were born in Hesse Cassel. They immigrated in 1732 into Oxford, NJ.Here is an excerpt from our notes about Johannes Hauger:
Per the records of the Washington County Historical Society (MD):Johannes immigrated around 1762 or 1763 from Hesse Cassel, Germany.Lived first in New Jersey, then moved in 1762 to Hagerstown, MD, where his children were born; they were baptized in the Salem German Reformed Chuch, Conococheague District, Washington Co, MD.He then moved in 1782 to Chambersburg and Antrim Township, PA, and later (around 1795) moved to Somerset County (then part of Bedford County), PA (some 50 miles west of Chambersburg).(Ed. Note:If he immigrated in 1763, how could he have moved in 1762 from New Jersey to Hagerstown?Immigration of his parents was in 1732.)
Most records state that he immigrated from either Prussia or Hesse Cassel, Germany, with his parents who then settled in New Jersey where his immigrant grandparents died.It is much more likely that he might have even been born in New Jersey to immigrant parents, since his grandparents and parents immigrated in 1732.He was born in 1749, so it had to be in New Jersey.
However, Mary Vernon Mish, in "Jonathan Hager, Founder", states that Johannes' brother Jonathan (The Tavern Keeper) Hager was born in New York or Pennsylvania in 1752.She was off by only one state.According to her, Jonathan "The Tavern Keeper" Hager (1752) was not an immigrant.Johannes (1749), brother of the Tavern Keeper, was therefore also not likely to have been an immigrant, and so was most likely born in New Jersey.Since Johannes'grandparents (Jonathan's parents) lived in Oxford, New Jersey, that is most likely the birthplace of George (>1744) Johannes (1749), and Jonathan (1752), and it is so shown here.
The book "Early Germans of New Jersey", by Theodore F. Chambers, 1895, states "JOHN HAUGER, b 1749, d 1813 Dec 6, m. MARIA BARBARA MILLER, b 1749 Apr 6, d 1826 May 11; came from Hagerstown, Maryland, to Somerset Co., Penn., 1793, then rem. to Bedford Co, Pa.His parents came from Prussia to Phila, then to Hagerstown, when he was 13 years of age (?); spell their name Hauger."
New Jersey Archives record one John Hager in a company of NJ Revolutionary troops, as an Ensign; it appears certain that that was this John Hager (Hauger).Michael Shultz, father of Hannah Shultz who married John Hager's son John, was also in this same NJ company.
