I haven't found any support for the idea that Baton Hattaway (~1792-1876) of Washington County, Georgia, who married Martha (--?--), was the father of James Baton Hattaway (b. 1814-1818) or any son named William. The earliest census record I have for Baton is 1820, when he would have been about 28 years old. Other than Baton, there were 3 females and one male in the household, and the male is a match for his known son David Jackson Hattaway.

Without an exhaustive analysis here of Baton's census records, my tentative summary of his offspring is as follows:

1. David Jackson Hattaway (~1817-1874) m1. probably Betsy Coffield in Georgia, m2. Elizabeth (--?--) in Alabama; some children, but I don't know who they were.

2. Unknown female, b. bet. 1815-1820 with matches in the 1820 and 1830 census.

3. Mary Hattaway (1819-1904), m. John A. Curry. Two children, both of whom died as young adults without marrying.

4. Nathan Hattaway (~1821-aft.1878), AKA ggg-granddaddy, m. Arrenia/Serenia Lingo. Three children, many descendants.

5. Unknown female, b. bet. 1820-1825 with matches in the 1830 and 1840 census.

6. John Hattaway (1826-1888) m. Martha Lingo, nine children and many descendants.

7. Ann Hattaway (1827-1894) m. Nathaniel Burt Giles, three children and many descendants.

8. Leonidas Hattaway (~1831-bef.1876); probably married, probably no children.

9. Female b. bet 1830-1835 with a match in the 1840 census; may be Lucresia Hattaway (~1831-bef.1860) who m. John B. Giles; one child.

10. Unknown male, b. bet. 1830-1835 with a match only in the 1840 census.

11. Martha A. Hattaway (1835-1902), m. Appleton G. Amerson, 10 children and many descendants.

12. Frances E. Hattaway (~1836-aft.1885), no known marriage, one daughter, many descendants.

13. Benjamin Oliver Hattaway (1837-1895), m. Nancy A. Giles; 11 children and many descendants.

14. Thomas L. M. Hattaway (b. ca. 1842); no data after the Civil War.

15. Alfred Baton Hattaway (1845-1902), m. Mary Jane Amerson; 13 children and many descendants.

The above is based on census records, marriage records, probate records, newspaper accounts, deeds, death certificates and cemetery records. If anyone has any corrections or comments, please reply here. (I've had to restrict my email address due to spam.)

Thanks,
Nancy Hattaway Miller
