I reviewed that same census page and it looks to me like
the census taker is using ditto marks for the "Carolina"
part of the birthplace of the enmueree's. I think the "N" you are referring to indicates "North" of North Carolina. Comparing that letter with the one at the top of the form makesme believe that is what has been done.
