Silas Hathaway b. 1749 Rockaway, NJ; m. 24 Jan 1773 Prudence Baldwin; d. 1803

Hathaways of America, 1970 edition, p. 183 indicates that Silas was "Capt. in Revolution".

"Tombstones of the Presbyterian Burial Ground, First Presbyterian Church, Rockaway, NJ has "Hathaway, Capt. Silas (old English script) Death 2/17/1805 age 53 years 4 mos 5 da" (Note: a Hathaway Family Association researcher noted that 1805 should be 1803 as his will was probated 3/18/1803).

I have been unable to verify any military service during the Revolution War. All DAR record copies have him listed as "Patriotic Service" which is appropriate as he was a signed subscriber as a Revolutionary Patriot of Pequannock Township.

He is listed as "Silus Hathaway" in the 1793 listings of the Morris County Militia (but this was after the Revolutionary War).

I currently hold the belief that the "Capt." was a result of militia service after the war; and that while being a supporter of the revolution, he did not serve in the military during the war.

If anyone has information that can confirm (or dispute) my analysis, it would be most appreciated.
