Hi Robert...
Since I am descendant of the Hatfield family, and probably I am related to the Hatfield's of which you speak of...let me give you my word on it. According to everything I have seen regarding our family and the feud, Ellison Mounts was an illigetment son of Ellison Hatfield and Sarah Ann Staton. Sarah Ann was Ellison's mother. However, several people give it as Harriet Hatfield.
I have studied all the families in the feud, but the story of Ellison Hatfield/Mounts has always been a mystery to me for the longet time and I guess it will probably never be a solved one, either. The question regarding why George Hatfield kept the Hatfield name instead of the Mounts name is fairly interesting too...but I do not know the answer to it either. Maybe George & Ellison were brothers?
