PREACHER DEACON EURIOUS SMYTH was born May 31, 1734 in Wilmington, PA (now New Castle, DE), and died 1797 in Russell Co, VA.He married BRITA BRIGITTO ANDERSDATTER ANDERSON November 22, 1753 in Old Swedes Church, Wilmington, New Castle Co, DE, daughter of PETER ANDERSON and KERSTIN.She was born November 17, 1733 in New Castle Co, DE, and died 1797 in Russell Co, VA.
Notes for PREACHER DEACON EURIOUS SMYTH:
Some spell his first name ERICUS but according to Martha Tyler Graham on Genforum it is EURIOUS. Some also have his last name as SMITH but his father went by SMIDT, SMYTH, SMITT, and SCHMIDT. Eurious's children went by Smith. His Occupation was a MILLER and Nationality was Swedish German. He was a Deacon in the Old Swedes Church.
According to the LDS site, he was Christened on July 3, 1734 in the Old Swedes Church, Wilmington, DE but some have the date as June 3, 1734, in the Old Swedes Church, Wilmington, New Castle, DE.
According to Dorothy Tuttle of Murray, she has the following info: Christening Sponsors: John Engeberg, Carl Christopher Springer, Mrs. Brita Suds (Seeds), Mrs. Betti Colsberg.
He was no doubt named after the beloved pastor of Old Swedes Church, Ericus Tobias Bjork who married his aunt, Christina Stalcop.
Nov 23, 1756, Eurious Smith, of Christiana Hundred, New Castle Co, DE, sells to Thomas Shipley for three hundred and six pounds, 136 acres that was willed to him by Hanse Smith, bearing date Dec 12, 1753. His father purchased the land from Charles Springer on Nov 4, 1732, recorded in Lib G pg 657 U. The land was described as being by a corner of Samuel Milner's land and by Andrew Stalcop's tract. The Will referred to in the deed has not been found on record in New Castle Co, DE. The deed was recorded Dec 5, 1788.
He and his family are missing from Nov 1757, when his son, John was buried in Old Swedes Church in Wilmington until Apr 1770, when he begins making continuous records in SW VA. These are the years in which most of his children were born.
He and his family left Wilmington, New Castle Co, DE, in 1757, and worked down the Valley of VA until they finally settled in what became Russell Co. VA, right on the TN border, both dying in the 1790's. Many of Bridget's siblings also ended up there, many after being in Orange Co, NC.
His brothers, Frederick and Tobias were in VA and regularly show up in records, but Eurious is notable by his absence. Though records of the family stop after 1757, in 1770 they are living in Augusta Co, VA, where Eurious is cited for failure to report to a muster roll on April 9, 1770.
On Jun 18, 1770, VA. Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in VA, extracted from the Original court records of Augusta Co. 1745-1800, Deed Book # 19, additional members of the executive committee, page 529, Page 145. 18th June, 1770. Charles Hays, Sr., and Margaret ( ) to Charles Hays, Jr., 10 acres devised to Charles, Sr., by his father John Hays, by will dated 5th December, 1750. Teste: Andrew and John Hays, Ericus Smith. Delivered, October Court, 1784.
On Aug 14, 1770, he was also a witness to Eracker Smith to John Stephenson's estate, pg 116 Chalkely's Chricles of Scotch Irish Settlement Vol 3.
In 1773, he settles in Washington Co, VA, area now Russell Co, VA, dated 1783 but referencing actual settlement on the land in 1773.
Aug 13, 1774, Eurious served in Lord Dunmore's War and was at Elk Garden Fort, where he was reported as "Found dead till Aug 29, 1774 ", in Capt. Daniel Smith's Company, Pg 81 Lord Dunmore's War Virginia Colonial Militia. Elk Garden Creek is now in Russell Co, VA. ***See NOTES
From "Virginia's Colonial Soldiers" by Lloyd D. Bockstruck:"After John Connally, the agent of John Murray, Earl of Dunmore, Royal Gov of VA, took possession of Fort Pitt, he named it Fort Dunmore early in 1774. He attempted retaliation for the Indian outrages and on June 10,1774, the Govener called out the militia of SW VA under the command of Gen Andrew Lewis. In August, the militia of Frederick Co, under Maj Angus McDonald raided the Indian towns on the Muskingum River. Lord Dunmore came to the frontier and called on the neighboring militia to join in the expedition against the hostiles. Before his forces could join those of Gen. Lewis, the Indians attacked the latter on Oct 10, 1774.The Indians were soundly defeated at the battle of Point Pleasant. Eurious Smith's name appears among others on a monument commemorating the Battle of Point Pleasant, the first battle of the American Revolution.
On May 9, 1778, he was one of the appraisers of the estate of Richard Lenam in Washington Co, VA., Pg 990 Annals of SW VA by Lewis Preston Summers.

Dec 9, 1785, he was among the signers of a petition for division of Washington Co, VA. to form Russell County.Petition to Form Russell County - December 1785.
The petition of sundry inhabitants of Clinch River, Moccasin Creek, Powells Valley, and others, citizens of Washington Co, humbly represent that your petitioners are situated from the line of Montgomery as it crosses near the source of the Clinch River, down the same eight miles; thence to the extreme settlements of Powells Valley forty more. The greatest portion of your petitioners have to travel from twenty five miles and some eighty or an hundred; moreover are generally interrupted by Clinch Mountain and the north branch of the Holstein River; the former affording very difficult passes; the latter much danger and difficulty in crossing it in spring and after considerable rains; continuous to its southern bank, a chain of hills almost as difficult as Clinch Mountain; so that great difficulty arises to your Petitioners not only in attending Courts, but Courts Martial. And from the extent of schism between our small settlements make it exceedingly difficult to arrange companies without subjecting some to travel 15 and 20 miles to private mustery. There are two difficulties in the militia law that principally affect your Petitioners. There are evils small indeed to the feelings we constantly undergo when obliged to leave our helpless families exposed at so very greast distances to obey the laws of our country. And however evident the danger may appear to us will not certainly on our failure of duty plead our excuse.Circumstance alone is sufficient to claim the human respect of the Legislature to remove the grievance. We therefore pray your Honorable House will take our case into consideration and divide the county. We further pray a line may be fixed along Clinch Mountain to the Carolina line; or with the line at present dividing the county into two regiments to the aforesaid Carolina line; then with the said line to Cumberland Mountain including taht existing county between Cumberland Mountain and Montgomery line and Clinch Mountain, or the aforesaid regimental line for the new county and southeast of the said Clinch Mountain remain Washington County; and we your Petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray.
