No book, although I did publish an article in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, that addressed the immediate family of William Haswell, shipwright, father of American immigrant Anthony Haswell and of your eldest William (husband of Sarah Gray).Your 'uncle' had a long career, most noticeably as first officer of HMS Investigator on the Franklin Search expedition that ended up completing the Northwest Passage. A first cousin was also and Admiral, William John Samuel Pullen, whose mother Amelia was eldest daughter of William and Sarah (Gray) Haswell. In an earlier generation, a distant cousin Robert Haswell was also superannuated as an Admiral - he served with Cook on HMS Northumberland at Quebec, and was the commander of Collingwood on the HMS Hornet in the West Indies. On the American side, Robert Haswell and Susannah Haswell Rowson (both have biographies on Wikipedia) were nephew and niece of Adm Robert.
Also of note, the William who married Sarah Gray was a life-long ship's carpenter int he Royal Navy, and served at Gibraltar on HMS Deadnought along with two sons and a nephew, while the elder William Henry was a midshipman on HMS Phebe in the same battle.(For them, see The National Archives site where they have a Trafalgar ancestors databasewith William's service record from the time he was made carpenter until just before his death.) Also during the Napoleonic Wars William Henry as midshipman on HMS Endymion was taken by an Ottoman ship and forced to serve as a galley slave until freed by a Russian warship some months later.
Most of the Royal Navy Haswell officers (and 2 US Navy officers) were members of this same Portsmouth family, but Cochrane's John Haswell is the exception. He was born in Jedburgh, Scotland into a bourgeois family with no naval connections. Also, brothers Lt. Edward Haswell and Royal Marine Lt. John Stepney Haswell do not fit into the Portsmouth group as far as I have been able to tell, although with them I haven't been able to go beyond their father (who may also have been of the Jedburgh group).
I'd be happy to swap information - drop me an email.(I am also in touch with another descendant of William and Sarah Gray, and I could get the two of you together.)
Todd
